What is the LLS Firefighter Stairclimb?
The LLS Firefighter Stairclimb is the world's largest on-air stair climb competition, and annual fundraiser held at the tallest building in town, the Columbia Center. All 2,000 participants are career, volunteer, or retired firefighters who will climb up the second tallest skyscraper west of the Mississippi in full turnout gear, weighing over 60 pounds, while on-air. Throughout this grueling course, we all remember that every step forward is representative of moving closer to a cure. Although this is an extreme test of physical endurance, it pales in comparison to what blood cancer patients endure. All proceeds raised directly benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and since its inception in 1991, this event has raised over $20 million thus far.
Climb. Conquer. Cure.
I will be participating in the LLS Firefighter Stairclimb in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Before I ascend the Columbia Center in downtown Seattle, WA, I will be raising funds throughout the season in the name of funding and finding a cure. Please consider making a donation to not only help me achieve my personal fundraising goal, but to benefit patients and their families everywhere.
Why I Climb
The LLS Firefighter Stair climb has been a tradition in my department for sever years and I am proud to take part in it with our team this year. I have seen how blood cancers have affected local families and my teammates and I know how much this event means to them. It is estimated that someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer every 3 minutes in the United States. Sadly, it is also estimated that one of those diagnosed with this condition die every 9 minutes. With no means of prevention or early screening for most blood cancers LLS focuses mostly on treatment therapies.
Where Does the Money Go?
The majority of donations are used to fund research into treatments. LLS seeks out the most promising research and partners with academic institutions as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in order to expedite the development of life saving treatments.
Many of these treatments are also being used in clinical trials for Diabetes, Lupus Nephritis, Melanoma, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis; as well as many other cancers such as Brain, Breast, Bone, Kidney, Lung, Ovarian, Pancreatic, Prostate, Skin, and Stomach Cancer.
Some of the money also goes to support patient families.
Shortly after Thanksgiving I began training for this event. After ending my regular 24 hour shift, I have been climbing up and down 80-140 flights of stairs with a 40-60 lb weighted vest. Days when I'm not in the stairwells, I am running a 5k at my local park or at the gym on a stair climber machine.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and sincere generosity in this cause worth climbing for.
