Deane's Big Climb Page :)
Hello! I will be participating in Big Climb Seattle for the 10th year in March 2020! I first started on Jank’s team: Graham Crossfit, then my own team, LCFM: Lean Clean Fighting Machines and then, back onto Jank/Mike Ritchie’s (which is now, Mike/Terri Anne) team, AK Airlines.
I can say it is fun...the part of seeing friends and making new ones each year. It is an electric atmosphere! I can also be honest saying the race to the top is brutal. There is no other way to put it. So, why do I do it? For these people:
In Loving Memory of:
~Steve Jankelson, our leader who died January 2019. There are no words for the impact he had on raising $ and awareness for blood cancer and the friendship he shared with so many of us. An Alaska Airlines pilot, an USAF Major retired pilot, a father, a leader, a cheerleader (not literally) and a dear friend whom we all miss dearly.
~Mark Wittig, who died 09/2019...a young father, Army, ex-security, boxer, son, friend to those deserving and someone I didn't know, but wish I had as I watched his friendship with my friend.
~Dennis Nead, who died a few years ago..married to my ex's cousin. Many memories of laughter at family parties. Someone I considered an older brother.
~Kim Whitbeck, my friend Debbie's sister. Someone I never met, but know she was special from how amazing Debbie is to me.
~Hunter..young lad who died a year ago and never met. Saw his posting through a friend on FB and ironically met his grandfather at work when I saw a logo on his vehicle that indicated he knew Hunter.
~Paul Allen..never met him but he did so much for our city and state.
~Blake Nordstrom: never met but bought their clothes n worked for their company.
In Honor of survivors:
~Ray Watts, my uncle..the reason I started this adventure in 2011.
~Mike Ritchie, our co-captain who is a father, husband (amazing wife, Heather), friend, pilot... Superman!
~Colton Matter, someone I see each year and smile at his inner fight and strength with his smiling and loving family surrounding him.
~ Marchus Acheson, AK Air and met through a friend. Huge personality and has a huge taste of fresh air in his approach to living.
The pictures of the survivors and those who are in a heavenly place carry me to the top each year..inspiring me to continue to raise awareness and funds to save more.
Our efforts help fight against blood cancers!
What is the Big Climb?
The Big Climb is a stairclimb up the Columbia Center - the tallest skyscraper in downtown Seattle. There are 69 floors of stairs, 1311 steps, and 788 feet of vertical elevation. Although it will be challenging, it pales in comparison to what blood cancer patients go through. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Who is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. The mission of LLS is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Every day, more than 347 LLS sponsored researchers come closer to the goal of finding a cure for leukemia and related blood cancers. Locally, LLS funds 10 researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and University of Washington Medical Center. Your support and commitment to the mission of LLS enables us to continue this important work of saving lives and aids us in our ability to reach patients in our community.
Thank you for your time and I hope that you will consider donating to this cause!
