Climb. Conquer. Cure.
March 24th, 2024
Hello! This year, as I lace up my shoes for Big Climb Seattle, I embark on a journey deeply personal and profoundly symbolic. I climb in memory of my Uncle Eddie, who, at this moment, would have been 69 years old. Ascending the 69 floors of the Columbia Center becomes not merely a notable coincidence but a poignant parallel to the legacy I seek to honor—a legacy defined by bravery, a thirst for adventure, and an unwavering resilience. This climb is my tribute to Uncle Eddie, whose adventurous spirit and capacity to overcome life's hurdles endlessly inspire me.
Remembering Uncle Eddie:
Eddie's life was a vivid mosaic of daring exploits, unshakeable courage, and profound affection for those around him. Among his numerous achievements, one remains particularly emblematic: the ascent and subsequent hang-gliding descent from Mount McKinley. This journey, requiring 25 days to ascend and a mere 45 minutes to glide back to earth, showcases the sheer audacity and love for the extreme that characterized his life. Yet, it wasn't these audacious acts that defined his end, underscoring the unpredictable nature of our existence. His legend includes roping up with the legendary Reinhard Messner and braving the treacherous waters of Alaska Crab fishing. As an electrician in Barrow, Alaska, Eddie balanced his life between the demands of his profession and an enviable array of adventures, living in a manner that would make Ernest Hemingway nod in approval.
However, the essence of Eddie's legacy is found not in his exploits but in his philosophy towards life—a living fully embraced, risks undertaken with insight, and an unwavering commitment to the ties of family and friendship. As I tackle the 69 floors of the Columbia Center, each step is a homage to what would have been his 69 years, a reflection of his indomitable spirit that continues to guide and motivate me.
What is the Big Climb?
The Big Climb challenges participants to ascend the tallest skyscraper in downtown Seattle, the Columbia Center, with its 69 floors, 1311 steps, and 788 feet of vertical elevation. This endeavor mirrors the resilience needed to face the formidable battle against blood cancers. All proceeds benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), aiding their mission to cure blood-related cancers and improve the lives of patients and their families.
Who is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer. Supporting my climb means enabling LLS to continue its critical work in research and patient support, edging us closer to a future where blood cancers are conquerable.
By joining me in this climb, you're not just supporting a crucial cause; you're honoring an extraordinary individual whose life reminds us to embrace every moment with passion and purpose.
Thank you for considering supporting this cause. Together, we can make a significant impact, climbing in memory of Eddie and in support of those fighting blood cancers.
