Fundraising 101

  1. Have a department visit with Scott Firefighter Climb staff! We're here to help and have lots of ideas to share. Department visits generally last anywhere between 30 minutes and an hour. The staff will provide ideas and help to develop a fundraising plan of action. It's also a great opportunity to get all of your questions answered.

  2. Matching GiftsSee whether your employer participates in our Matching Gift Program. Matching gifts can double (or even triple) the original donation amount. Make sure all of your donors are aware of our matching gift program and ask them to participate. Matching gifts are an easy way to increase fundraising totals. Please keep in mind that matching gifts can sometimes take up to 3 months to reach our offices, so plan ahead and submit them to your employer as early as possible!

  3. Online Fundraising Page:  Be sure to edit your page. Upload a picture of your team or a picture of the person you are climbing for and personalize the text on your page to explain why you are climbing. Once you've personalized your page, send the link to all of your friends and family members.

  4. Post on Social Media: Just ask! You will be surprised at how many people want to help. Create a quick message explaining why you are climbing and include a link to your personal fundraising page. Also, consider sharing the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb video on your post so your potential donors can learn about the event.

  5. Department Fundraisers: We understand that meeting the fundraising minimum and asking for donations can sometimes be tough. Try to plan and participate in department fundraisers with your entire team to generate funds. Almost anything can be turned into a fundraiser, so be creative! Previous Scott Firefighter Stairclimb department fundraisers have included pub crawls, boot drives, stair climb competitions, cook-offs, trivia nights, concession sales, drawings, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: Raffles are not a LLS sanctioned fundraising method:

In Washington and Alaska, only qualified non-profit organizations can legally conduct raffles. The Washington / Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society chooses not to hold a raffle/gaming license because of the significant administrative burden, high cost and personal liability it places on LLS and its staff. For more information on Washington State raffle/games of chance rules, please click here: Washington Gaming Rules and for Alaska’s rules, please click here: Alaska Gaming Rules

It is important to know the raffle and gaming laws in the state in which you reside. As a volunteer raising funds for LLS you are bound by those laws when holding a raffle of any kind, including knowing the types of prizes that are lawfully allowed.

Firefighters past and present, as well as sponsors, volunteers and staff have worked incredibly hard over the years to build the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb into the biggest, best on-air stair climb in the world.  We know that you are working extremely hard in helping us meet our fundraising goals and for that we are grateful. Like you, we want to protect the stellar reputation of the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb for years to come.
